February & March Events

REVIEW: February 14, 2002

Marcia Escoffery & Band @ Orleans, Finsbury Park

There is nothing like two amazing vocalists jamming with a solid band! Marcia Escoffery proved that on Valentine's day as she serenaded a select crowd at Orleans Club (259-261 Seven Sisters Road, London) with original material from her forthcoming album and some old favourites like Chaka Khan's "Sweet Thing".

Randolph Matthews, her co-vocalist throughout the night, and London's answer to Al Jarreau, backed her with some inspired vocals, and took the lead spot occasionally including a rousing cover of "Outstanding".

The band, Joseph (bass and Musical Director), Philip (Drums), and Dave (guitar) were, to put it simply, sublime, and there was a guest appearance by Nii Ayikwei Parkes with some love poetry.

What I found most refreshing was that the band played through the night without a break! How rare it is to see such a hard-working ensemble in these times.

*There is jazz at Orleans every Thursday night.
